Mallorca is by far the largest of the Balearic islands. The popular island group is about the same height as Lisbon in the western Mediterranean. The Spanish coast is about 100 km away. Mallorca’s area is approximately 3640 km ⊃ 2, with a maximum north-south expansion of 100 km and east-west extension of 70 km. Capital of the Balearic Islands Palma de Mallorca has about 325,000 inhabitants. The metropolis is located on the Bay of Palma in the south of Majorca. With 28,000 inhabitants, Manacor is the second largest town on the island and the largest center on the East Coast. Manacor is especially famous for its pearl farming, which is visited by many tourists. At the end of the motorway from Palma to Alcudia is the industrial town of Inca. In the third-largest town on the island (21,500 inhabitants), the leather manufacturers offer a worthwhile destination. Center of the west coast of the 11,000 inhabitants Sóller with its Puerto Sóller. The town is an ideal starting point for hikes and excursions to the picturesque Westküste.Mallorcas middle is dominated by the Central Plains Es Pla. The Serra de Tramuntana offers alone 40 mountains higher than 1,000 meters. On the 1443-meter high Puig Major, the highest mountain in Mallorca, snow is not uncommon in winter. The west coast is a paradise for hikers and experienced cyclists. The sea is the coast from almost vertical, and there are very few sandy beaches.
